In the story I describe the importance of national language and culture for the survival and freedom of a nation. A nation can uphold its freedom if its people stick to their national language. An old French schoolmaster Hamel had been teaching at a village school for forty years. His students did not take interest in learning their national language. The Germans took over two French provinces.

It was Hamel's last day at school. Everyone in the class room was very sad. The elders of the village were also sitting on the rear desks to thank Hamel for his faithful service of forty-years Hamel said that all education would be given in German language from the next day The school was like a small kingdom whose ruler was departing for good. The students were very sorry. In the past, French looked so dry and difficult to learn. But now they were completely changed. Hamel blamed the students and their parents for not learning their national language. He also blamed himself for sending his students to water his garden during school me. He said that French was the strongest, clearest and most beautiful language of the World.

Now Hamel taught his last Lesson. It looked so simple and easy to understand. Then there was writing exercise "Alsace, France! Alsace, France!" Then they sang a poem with the elders. At the end Hamel rose to speak. "My friends-My friend-I-I". He could not complete his sentence. He moved to the blackboard and wrote with chalk, "VIVE LA FRANCE".
